It's time for Stamp A Faire over at Papertrey Ink and  that means it's a day of fun and creativity.  I am trying to join in with some projects but being a weekend, am not sure if I will be able to do much, but we have time till Tuesday..hope to get more done!

Here is my first one.. I chose this color recipe..

I came up with a piece where I have tried to balance color and ink. This was done using dip pen, micron pens &watercolors. The sentiment  by Papertrey Ink is from the Phrases and Praises set.

Got to go and get more done...see you!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Watercolor- A Street Scene

                                         "It's wet"-10"x14" Watercolor On Paper.

Last week, I worked on some new pieces and all of them were landscapes. A complete change of scene from the abstracts that I had been doing since the start of the month. Slightly more involved and larger in scale, I enjoyed the process thoroughly!

When I first started painting, many many years back, landscapes were my favorite subject to paint, and back then I would primarily do oils, reserving my watercolors to quickly sketch in my journal. In other words, my watercolor journey up until then had been a disaster! It had been lacking on so many different levels that it's hard to even describe them.

I dabbled in oils for almost 12 years before I decided to switch to watercolors. I still remember the transition...I had purchased some awesome artist's quality watercolors and had gotten my new mop brush too wet by mistake. It was soaking wet and since it was my first time using a squirrel mop, I had been unable to judge the strength of pigment and water. The very first brushstroke I made on damp paper made me gasp with delight!

As I saw the rich blue french ultramarine disperse and bloom, I knew this was it..this is what I had been looking for in my watercolor paintings and had failed to achieve until that moment. The beautiful granulation  from that one single brushstroke had changed my perspective about watercolors. Never knew what it was capable of until that moment!

I stepped back and began to wonder, what I had done differently that had led to this life changing moment!
..yes! That was what it was..the use of so much water which I had thought to be a mistake was in reality the way to go when painting with watercolors. The only way to move the pigment and achieve that soft dreamy look was to keep your paintings moist. Once they dry, they are done! Moisten them and they come alive! The fact that my colors were of a better quality definitely added to it, but I had seen artist's work wonders with plain old children's paints. Until then I had assumed that painting with watercolors was reserved for a select few and I was not one of them!

Being a self taught artist, I have learned a lot along the way, simply through trial and error. I have had  plenty of happy accidents and  I would long to paint with more confidence and predictability.  And that I guess comes through practice...nothing can take the place of practicing every single day. Paint ..paint and paint some more!

The reason for the short story above, is because after I shared this particular piece on social media, I received multiple messages asking about the colors used, the brand, and of course people wondering when they could paint this way. Some very kindly and graciously said that the piece reminded them  of artists who according to me are masters and as grateful as I am for all those kind, generous and encouraging comments I would not even dare mention those master artists here because to take their name in the same breath as mine would not do justice to them . They are a league apart, I am still a learner and  in all probability will perhaps remain there.

When I read those comments, I smiled to myself and felt humbled yet wondered if they were really talking about my piece of work!
I, who did not know how to paint with this medium and struggled everyday to get the right proportions of water and pigment,  learned with great difficulty on how to get my thoughts down quickly enough before the paper dried on me! I have miles to go before I can even approach a gallery to show my work and that means, I have lots to learn let's do it together!

Join us on our Facebook's a fun and encouraging place to be and of course, every day we have lots of people sharing their work, so there is no dearth for inspiration!

Stop by Doodlewash for all the details.

  A closer look..

Thanks for all the messages and appreciation for this grateful!

Will be back with the other  two pieces later in the week. Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!

Celebrate- World Watercolor Month

In Flight'- Watercolor on paper - 6x9

As I mentioned in my previous post, July is all about celebrating watercolors !  The ultimate challenge is to paint 31 paintings in 31 days. I had initially thought of doing an illustrated journal and  painting my everyday life in it and even made a special journal for it, but  then it occurred to me that all this while I  had been doing just that..painting my everyday life, I wanted to do something different ..a whole month of different!

I wanted to paint but in a more meditative manner. I wanted to pay no attention to design, sketch, pattern nor subject, I wanted it to come from deep within and be  guided by nothing more than my emotions and state of mind. I wanted to be in the moment.

Watercolor pigments have a wonderful way of telling a story, if we let it to...and the best way to do that is to apply pigment to wet paper and just let it be. Once the decision was made, I could not wait  to explore the deep potential of those wonderfully rich pure pigments .

I began on this new path of painting and it felt as though I had never painted before! It was exhilarating and definitely 'different'!

Handmade Watercolor Sketchbook

July has been officially declared as the World Watercolor month and in celebration we will be sharing our watercolors through the month with the hashtag #worldwatercolormonth. Join us on FB !

I needed a new sketchbook for this event and I needed one with my favorite Arches paper. The ones that are available are spirally bound and I needed one that was stitched, so I decided to bind my own.

After I shared a picture of my sketchbook on Instagram and FB, I received a lot of how to questions about it.Instead of replying to each one separately and spamming the group with multiple pictures, I decided to share it here. These are  stepped out  pictures. I had taken these, so that I would not forget how to do it in the future,...not the very best, but hopefully it will help others who want to make their own watercolor journal.

A while back, I had seen a YouTube video on this...If I find it, I will update the post, but there are plenty of bookbinding videos pick one and get started!

The one I have used is the traditional bookbinding technique using cords and a special stand for it, but since I did not have that, I decided to improvise and used a jute cord and shelves and painters tape! It worked well!

1- tear and fold and mark ...

2-get the cords ready ..

3- Ready for binding..

4- Almost done with the stitching...

5- Add the cover using chipboard or the backing of used sketchbooks.

Nothing more satisfying than this! try it!

Now to fill'er up with watercolor illustrations! Ready for July!

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful week!

Watercolor Maps.

South Carolina... Yellow Jessamine and Carolina Wren

When I received a request for a state map watercolor, a couple of weeks back, I never thought it would become my current favorite subject to paint! I have been unable to get past this subject and have to paint at least one state everyday!lol!

I receive a request for a different state and I begin to visualize the scene in it. The best part comes when I read the stories behind the requests..born and raised in a particular state, destination weddings, strong memories that a particular home in a particular state evokes and so it continues! Love the stories!

Here are some of the latest pieces...and they can be found on Etsy.

Michigan. Robin, apple blossoms and beautiful scenic landscapes.

Florida. Juicy sweet oranges..mockingbird ..and bright blue skies.

Over the weeks now, I have learned so much about states and birds and flowers ! I did not know that a mockingbird was just grey and white and I have read the book many times over ! lol!

NewJersey...violets..Goldfinches ..lighthouses and of course looking at NY skyline from the NJ shore!

If you need a particular state to be painted for you, leave me a comment below or contact me on Etsy

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend!

State Map Art

Illinois-5x7 Watercolor on 100%cotton 140# Cold Press watercolor paper.

Last week,  someone asked me can you do 'state art'...and I went ..  'what art' ? I had heard of 'state of the art' but never 'state art'!
...then she explained to me that she wanted me to paint her the map of Illinois state! That, I believe, is called map art/state art...don't hold me on that not so sure! lol!

Always up for a challenge, I was super excited to attempt something new, I quickly looked up maps and drew my IL state map. Initially, I thought of just filling it in with a wash of colors, but then I thought, why not make it more interesting and add a scene to it. After spending a major part of my  morning on it,  I had the  painting ready. But the fun had just begun and I did not want to stop as I painted one more and more!

I was so excited with the way it turned out that I immediately shared it on social media and it was received with equal enthusiasm! How I wish there was a ' share ' button to my blog because I always forget to share it here !

On Etsy

After IL, I was eager to do a different state and was wondering which one to do next..and I asked on Instagram and someone suggested here it is..poppies..Golden Gate ..beautiful scenic California !

On Etsy

California5x7 Watercolor on 100%cotton 140# Cold Press watercolor paper.

I am loving this so much, that I might end up painting all 50 states! The fun is in visualizing the scene inside the map!

If you need  one to be painted for you..let me know and I will come up with something!

Like it? Leave me a comment below!

Watercolor 9x12 Arches Cold Pressed 140#

Thank God it's Friday!
...this week was  a short week with Monday being a holiday, but felt so long that I could not wait for it to end! Doctor appointments make them feel that way..was so tense and stressed out that I wanted Wednesday to be a Saturday and then all of this would be behind us!  Well! God has been kind and the appointments are done and it's finally Friday!

Last week, I mentioned about painting some Elephants and promised to share more are two of them .

I started with the smaller 5x7 one and once I was done with that, I was so excited that I decided to do the larger 9x12 piece. I truly enjoyed painting these, it was a different experience.

I am particularly fond of elephants and collect them  in various different forms. They remind me of the 'elephant and ant' fable, that  I had heard from my grandma when I was little. It was about how one should never underestimate the power of someone who is small not just physically but small in the grand picture of life. Today, he might 'look' to be a nobody but only time will tell how far he might go! I simply loved that story and learned a lot from that moral and even today I remember to practice it in my everyday life.

Watercolor- 5x7 Arches Cold Pressed 140#

The smaller one is on Etsy.

The larger one will be available for purchase soon soon as I can decide to part with it!lol!... my husband shares my love for elephants and likes  to have large and larger paintings around the house. He  has asked me twice already.." is the larger one going on Etsy?""yes..why?" Husband....." Well, it would look great with a double mat...are you sure? "..... and .....repeat!
..These kind of cryptic question to a question kind of answers confuse me! So am waiting for clarity and more detailed answers from husband before I list it! LOL!

That's about all for today! Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Thanks for stopping by!
